With the theme of “Global Carbon Neutrality and China’s Commitment,” the 2021 Zero Carbon Mission International Climate Summit held between September 22-24 aims to actively promote the national carbon neutrality vision and realize global temperature control goals. This Summit was co-hosted by Phoenix TV and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and jointly organized by IFENG.com, Phoenix Metropolis Media, Society of Entrepreneurs and Ecology Foundation (SEE Foundation), China Champions for Climate Action (C Team), and Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE). The United Kingdom attended the event as chair of COP26.
More than 70 guests, including Albert Arnold Gore Jr., former U.S. Vice President, Siddharth Chatterjee, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, Tu Ruihe, Head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in China, Jia Feng, Director of The Center for Publicity and Education of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and Marco Lambertini, Director General at WWF International, attended the Summit. The participants shared their insights into global carbon neutrality, corporate climate ambitions, green finance, energy transition, green buildings, and low-carbon transportation. The purpose was to gather resources from all parties and encourage enterprises to address climate change. Together to provide diversified guidance and services for local governments and enterprises in strategic planning, technology application, achievement display, knowledge sharing, and international exchanges in the process of achieving the goals for carbon peak and carbon neutrality.
Taking this as an opportunity, the Zero Carbon Mission International Climate Summit officially launched the annual Carbon Neutrality Action Leadership Award. The Award followed the standards of the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and the UN-supported “Race to Zero” initiative. This Award is designed to recognize individuals, teams, and projects with outstanding performance in business commitment, technological innovation, breakthrough action, influences dissemination, etc. The grand prize selection committee are authorities in the field of climate to evaluate the award nomination for enterprises. It will be selected, released, and promoted annually by all Phoenix TV’s media channels to encourage businesses and industries to take action on climate change and achieve emission reduction targets, setting an example in terms of action.
In his opening speech, He Daguang, Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer of Phoenix TV, stated that Phoenix TV seized the international communication of carbon neutrality as its mission. In the future, Phoenix TV will persist in establishing more inclusive zero-carbon mission communication platforms together with various cooperative organizations.
Later, Marco Lambertini, Director General of the WWF, pointed out that today’s Summit marks a shift in climate action to focus on the scale and pace of low-carbon development in the future. People should change their thinking and cherish nature, and countries worldwide should act to make full use of natural resources to combat climate change.
Siddharth Chatterjee also addressed the 2021 Zero Carbon Mission International Climate Summit. He pointed out that China’s statements and commitments are entirely consistent, and these goals are closely integrated with China’s 14th Five-Year Plan. He added that China’s solid political wills would inspire governments, businesses, and NGOs worldwide.
John Edwards, the British Trade Commissioner to China, highlighted the central role of business in climate action and proposed that each nation should accelerate the transition to green and resilient economies.
In his opening speech, John Murton, Special Envoy for the UN Climate Change Conference, pointed out that Chinese enterprises have become important members of the “Race to Zero” alliance. However, achieving climate action goals will require fundamental shifts in the global economy. Therefore, more businesses should be encouraged to join the “Race to Zero” alliance to support the Glasgow Negotiations and the global economy.
Albert Gore, Former US Vice President, delivered a congratulatory message to the Summit. He offered three suggestions on how to phase out fossil fuels in the near term. Government and business leaders need to develop bold plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is essential to promote an equitable transition from coal and gas to clean energy. Lastly, using affirmative actions to provide financial resources to assist developing countries for a clean-energy economy transition.
